New Zealand is an island country in the Southwest Pacific Ocean, with a population of 3.6
million. It lies about 1,600 kilometres south-east of Australia and was settled by the
Maori in about 900 AD. European settlement started in the late 1700's and became
independent in 1947.
Wellington is the capital but Auckland is the largest city with about one million people.
Auckland is called the City of Sails because it has harbours on both the Tasman Sea and
Pacific Ocean, as well as high boat ownership.
New Zealand has a "clean green image" and most tourists come for the scenery and
outdoor activities. Major events have included:
Sir Edmund Hillary was the first person to reach the top of Mount Everest. Winning the
America's Cup (one of Worlds top Yachting trophies) in 1995 and 2000.
